The November Molecule
The November Molecule
Scientist Will St. John has just made the discovery of a lifetime-he has discovered a cure for all autoimmune diseases. His breakthrough will not only guarantee tenure at his university, but also earn him a Nobel Prize and ensure his name is forever etched in the history of medicine. His name will be on the lips of scientists around the world, and his grandfather, Clemson St. John, a renowned Harvard neurosurgeon, will finally give him the respect he deserves. Will is at the top of his game. So when the army approaches him to offer him a five million dollar contract to conduct routine research, it is the icing on the cake.
However, he was tapped for a reason.
Susan Savarre, a full-bird colonel at the Walter Reid Army Institute of Research (WRAIR), has a problem she needs to bury and fast. The army has developed a drug that has serious psychological side effects, and now they have blood on their hands. The U.S. Secretary of State has been shot, and a decorated soldier is dead. The media is swarming and the army must cover it up, or lose a drug worth billions. Colonel Savarre has sifted through hundreds of files searching for the perfect mark and she's found one-Will St. John. He is a successful scientist, but he is also a problem drinker with a drug habit, a rebel at his university with a pile of Title IX complaints against him, and a reputation she can exploit. If he doesn't play along, she'll ruin his reputation by exposing his darkest secrets and worse-she'll make sure his discovery never sees the light of day.
When Will and his research assistant, Eve Konisken, discover the truth, Eve argues that they must make their findings public. But the colonel has threatened Will, and he is unwilling to risk his discovery-a cure for millions. Despite Will's warnings, Eve moves forward with her plan-the drug is dangerous and should be pulled from the shelf. On a hunch, she contacts the colonel's assistant, Louis Webster, who helps her connect the dots. Soon after, Will finds Eve murdered in her apartment, a pivotal moment that changes everything. Something inside the gregarious scientist breaks, and Will decides to do the right thing no matter the cost. He puts everything on the line-his reputation, his discovery and his life. In the end, Will escapes a web of pursuers including the police, military intelligence officers and assassins in order to hijack the senate committee hearing, tell the truth, and honor Eve's memory.
