The red sphere has existed for as long as humanity can remember. A device of unknown origin, its power brings peace and joy to the world. Without it, all hope for humankind would be lost.

Beginning with an Ice Age ancestor of modern humans, the sphere is gifted to protectors-those who are young, sharp-witted, and who think outside the box. The sphere passes from ancient China to Medieval Europe and Viking Scandinavia; from Renaissance Italy to a wagon train in the Wild West-and even into the hands of a famous, present-day rapper. Fighting against a diverse cast of protectors who work to prepare each other across generations are the Nonbreathers. These ferocious descendants of an outcast tribe want nothing but blood and conquest.
