This book is not about marriage, love, settlement, and everything that comes with it. It is, in fact, filled with a variety of life’s experiences, all of them compiled into this book.

The first chapter is narrated by Peter’s first wife. She reflects on her life with her husband, the love she offered him, the world she entered through marriage, the loss of a child, and her constant struggle with the belief that she was not enough for her husband since there was another woman in his life.

The second chapter presents Peter’s point of view. He describes his life with his first wife while being a part of wealthy society, yet always in love with a woman he could never fully have. The reader discovers that the man his first wife saw as a god is, in fact, just a simple man who possesses all the wealth in the world but cannot have the one person he truly desires.
The third chapter is Iudita’s perspective, the maid Peter fell in love with and finally married after many years. Coming from poverty, Iudita fought to rise above her original status. She initially fell in love with Peter but, in reality, never truly loved him. After they married, she became someone Peter didn’t want. She showed no real feelings for her husband, stealing money from him. 
The final chapter is from Iudita’s latest lover’s point of view, where the drummer clarifies the whole situation: Ilonka loved Peter, Peter loved Iudita, and Iudita loved Peter’s best friend, the writer.

While the concept of the book was interesting, I expected more focus on love and deeper emotional exploration. In contrast, the book explored a wide range of life topics such as freedom, solidarity, wealth, politics, free will, misunderstandings. Although there are many beautiful quotes in the book, the author attempted to cover so many aspects that it became chaotic for me. I do not enjoy politics in books, and there was too much direct philosophical discourse. I prefer when main ideas are subtly conv

Mi-a plăcut foarte mult romanul" Portretele nei căsnicii" de Sándor Marai. Este un volum foarte bine scris, cu multe idei profunde și care îndeamnă cititorul la reflecție.

Am ales cartea ca urmare a recomandărilor Libris; abia aștept s-o citesc!

Descopăr in ultimul timp o literatură maghiara de foarte buna calitate, Sandor Marai fiind unul dintre autorii preferați!
