Artist Jo Proferes painted western images, including a series that highlighted Nez Perce perspectives and history. Created for exhibition by the tribe during America's Bicentennial celebration, the paintings show they had little to celebrate. In the late 1970s, the Idaho Statehouse and Spokane's Museum of Native American Cultures displayed the series. In the 1990s, PBS showcased several paintings in two documentaries: "America's Battlegrounds, '' and "Sacred Journey of the Nez Perce.''
